Statement of intent
I have been given the theme weird and wonderful, I'm going to make a portfolio demonstrating my ideas for this project. The first thing I thought of is surrealism as it fits into the theme of Weird and Wonderful, the reason why is because surrealism is not something you would normally see in real life, only in dreams or would you see these type of phenomenons.
For my initial research I will make a mind map full of my ideas related to anything weird and wonderful, then after that I will create a mood board as a visual presentation of my starting point for this project, my starting idea will be levitation because that's what I find most interesting and will be the easiest to do in my opinion, after that I will take inspiration from Wendy Wulz and use Photoshop to layer my dog's face and another person's face to give a surrealistic feel. I will see the many types of weird and wonderful topics like optical illusions, fantasy and surrealism.
When I was given the theme of weird & wonderful, I straight away thought about levitation and abstract concepts like optical illusions or even fantasy. I had a clear idea in my mind on what I should do for this project, I'm going to analyse Salvador Dali and his concept with clocks, this shows the surrealistic nature that his paintings possess, the melting clock is a metaphor on how when we get older and older, the more time we lose and even distance to ourselves. This is what Dali thinks of the concept of time.
Levitation is my first idea of what I'm going to do and will be my starting point for weird & wonderful, the idea I have is I'm going to use a model standing on a chair (a model with a sheet on his/her head), my second idea is I'm going to use mirrors to convey an abnormal and unsettling atmosphere. my last idea is going to be merging faces to create a mix of human and animal, I'm going to take a picture of my pet and a picture of a model and merge the faces together in Photoshop.
I would like to experiment with different Photoshop tools in this as I want to create different outcomes in all my shoots, what I'm thinking of doing is using layers and the lasso tool to try and remove unnecessary detail to create a surrealistic image. This will help me enhance my Photoshop skills as I will be able to use more options to create higher quality outcomes.
This project will be a demonstration of a continuous project thoughout this year, this will be one of my biggest project alongside Conflict as this will be part of my GCSEs.
Here is a mind map of all of the ideas I can think of relating to weird and wonderful:

The artist I have researched is Salvador Dali, he is a surrealist painter and I will analyse his painting, the painting I have chosen is called 'The persistence of memory'. I liked it because of how the clock looks like its melting and all the hands and numbers are flying and are being dragged in to the sky, the melting effect that Salvador Dali uses is something I would like to present in Photoshop and maybe even develop it further to enhance its weird nature.
The three photographers I will be looking at will be Rene Magritte, Tommy Inberg and Wanda Wulz, I came across these photographers when I was researching about weird and wonderful and their work styles have intrigued me, I feel like I can work in the style of them using Photoshop as my main tool, for Wanda Wulz the inspiration of using layers to make a merge of a cat and a human is something I feel is something I can achieve and will give a good final piece, Tommy uses black and white surrealism making it seem like there's no life and I will take inspiration from that by using mirrors and Rene has used levitation in some of his images in which I will then attempt to do. I will also analyse photos from these people as I will learn the messages behind these strange images.
I will take pictures for my shoots using the many camera settings to enhance my pictures and learn what they do. I would also like to use a wide range of Photoshop tools to experiment, this will help improve my skills in Photoshop as I will be using new tools I've not used before making my work more challenging to get the best possible outcome(s), some of these tools I'll be using will be the lasso tool, the capacitor tool, layering for images to put one image on top of another to make one image and the smudge tool to make my outcomes come out more clean and smooth.
I have 4 months to produce my portfolio of work towards the production of the final gallery for my shoots. I aim to complete my initial research within the first month or so and start analysing these images into detail by the second or third month. On the fourth month I'll improve my analysis by adding more detail and fixing up any mistakes, this will help show progression and my understanding towards weird and wonderful.
As my project progresses I will plan my shoots throughout my portfolio showing my ideas, what equipment I'll be using, if I'm using a model etc. These will include levitation, mirrors and layering different animals onto a human face. I'm aiming to produce the best final outcomes I possibly can while learning what different tools do when experimenting with Photoshop.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism aimed to revolutionise human experience, rejecting a rational vision of life in favour of one that asserted the value of the unconscious and dreams. The movement's poets and artists found magic and strange beauty in the unexpected and the uncanny, the disregarded and the unconventional.
In my opinion this means that what you see is only found in dreams and would be supernatural.

Salvador Dali's clock
Context
This painting was produced by Salvador Dali, a surrealist painter that was made way back in 1931 and is one of the first surreal paintings ever made and back then, it was considered really weird and out of the blue since people were used to paintings of people or a landscape of a realistic situation, but this is unrealistic even though it looks like something that could happen in your dreams, this painting is called 'The persistence of memory', the title, to me, shows that it relates to how when you are dreaming, you could have the same dream on multiple occasions whenever you sleep, it can also mean that this is how Dali depicted time as the clocks are literally melting away and he finds this 'persistent'. This painting was produced because of how he sees dreams whenever he sleeps and also took inspiration with a wheel of cheese that had just melted and thus, created this painting
Content
In the painting you can see a clock, however in the painting it's melting which is considered really weird because you wouldn't see a melting clock in real life and the numbers are also floating which could relate to the catchphrase 'time is flying' since the numbers are floating and time going fast at some point like when you're having fun with your friends, the cube that the clock is on seems to be disappearing when it's closer towards the landscape which is prove that this is a surreal painting. The melting clock could also be a reference to how when you're dreaming, time seems to go really fast in the outside world yet in dreams, time seems to go really slow, that's why Dali has used a melting clock to show that dreams are. Alternatively it can mean that since the clock is breaking, it can simulate how aging really is and how you should enjoy life as you go along and don't regret any decisions you make as you can't go back in time to fix anything in the past.
Composition
On the right side there's some sort of rocky landscape with an ocean next to it which shows it's outside, this is also proven as at the top you can see the sky blue and white. On the clock and beside it there's two insects which seems to be a wasp and a moth. All of these placements are intentionally placed to show what we will see first is a clock since it's in the middle on this painting. The paint used contrast greatly as we have a mix of blues, browns and yellows to emphasise how barren the image is, but is still filled with many interesting concepts/themes.
Comment
In my opinion I do not like this image because I don't like the style of surrealism, however I can see why others may like this type of art since different types of techniques were used in this painting and because of this I still respect how this painting was made for its intentions and how unique this painting was in the past.
Connection
This is going to connect my work as it's one of the most famous painting relating to weird and wonderful. This relates to surrealism due to its bizarre setting and the message it conveys. Since I'm going to produce surrealistic pictures, this painting is a good starting point with how they look and what techniques they use, since this is a painting however he had more freedom, I'll be using Photoshop instead since I'll be taking pictures then manipulating it by using layers, filters and the stamp tools.
Rene Magritte:
Form
The artist uses a monotone, dull and almost sinister set of colours like brown, black, white and grey, those are the main colours that the artist has used to create this painting and thus creates a sad yet almost calming setting in the painting. The medium of this work is oil paint from what I've researched, this painting is a portrait as to not distract anyone with filler content.
Context
This painting was made in 1937 which is 80 years ago, the individual who made this is a Belgian artist called Rene Magritte. Back then, surrealist paintings were still new to artists and weren't very common to come by.
This painting was one of three painting that were produced by Magritte for the ball room of Jame's London home.
It doesn't relate to most painting since surreal paintings were still fairly new at the time it was made (1937).
This painting was based of a book called 'On the threshold of freedom' where a man was looking outside his house to see a distorted world.

In this portrait, we see a man who's looking at the mirror, but the reflection is looking away from him seemingly to do his every move literally instead of just looking back, while the book is reflected correctly (this is believed to be a well-worn copy book called Edgar Allan Poe The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket), the reflected face is looking away. The painting is called 'Not to be reproduced' (La Reproduction interdite) which changed our way we see the work which could mean that we shouldn't repeat any mistakes.
This painting was made to scare and bewilder the audience, making them realise this painting is not what it seems, that's what makes this painting so interesting and creates discussions of what the true purpose of this painting provides. The main theme of this painting is the man looking at the mirror and we expect for the reflection to look back, but it's the opposite, instead it looks away. The message that I think its trying to create is a sense of curiosity we all have in ourselves and never have a chance to satisfy our curiosity.

Process
Since this painting was made a long time ago, the set of tools he may have used were most likely limited, the first tool he may have used was a paint brush, he may have even used a camera since the person in the painting seems realistic to me. What I think he did was take two pictures of someone looking away and managed to put both of those photos together.
Mood
The mood that it creates is tension as its weird factor is high and its even pretty creepy to a certain extent, I feel this way since the person will only see the back of his head, symbolising that they can't even see their own reflection. The colours the artist uses are monotone, meaning its a constant colour the painting uses to create an almost sad mood.
The main theme of this painting affects my mood since it only shows a man looking at a mirror while the reflection doesn't look back which makes the atmosphere feel thin since you won't encounter something like this in real life.

The colours that have been used in this painting are blue for the top half and green for the bottom half he has also used
white for the clouds and for the outline of a newspaper and the colour black for the suit and hat. The colours used are realistic for the objects in the painting for example green for the trees and the grass and blue for the clear sky. To me the painting resembles someone reading a newspaper in a park however the fact that Magritte has taken the background and put it onto the newspaper is what gives the surrealistic feel. The medium of this work is oil or acrylic paint.

Context
The painting is called 'no news is good news' and was made in 1928, this painting was made by surrealist Belgian painter called Rene Magritte when he was around 30 and was still developing his skills for his surrealistic work, Magritte did not start his painting career until after he was in the Belgian infantry, during my research I have found out that he started a trend he has by putting cloth on a person's face, this is because he had a bad childhood as his mother drowned herself when Magritte was 13 and unfortunately he was the one who discovered the body. His work questions the viewers perception of reality,I feel his life experiences has played a part in his ability to create surrealist work.
Content
The painting is about a man reading a newspaper looking for any interesting news and to be informed, on the front cover seems to be what's behind the man reading it. The message I think its trying to convey is how limited news was back then and most likely one topic was only talked about for years when it's already outdated, apart from that there's nothing else interesting going on in the background since all we see is the sky and the grass with a man as the main focus.
Process
This painting was made in 1928, he has used acrylic paint to produce this painting, he has used an layering technique of two images to create this piece of art and make it seem like the newspaper is the background behind the person.
Mood
The mood that this painting creates, in my opinion, is limited since all you see is a background and nothing else interesting. I feel like this because I'm not a major fan of surrealistic work, however i'll still use it to inspire my work since it does follow the same formulas of the work that I've done.

Tommy Ingberg - 5Cs
Context
This image was taken by Tommy Ingberg and was born on 1980 in Sweden who dreamed of becoming a computer engineer but instead he chose a photography career, he's known as a famous photographer for his surrealism work, this photo is called 'anchored' and is taken fairly recently in 2010, when he was 15 (in 1995) he got his first camera and was experimenting with it to gain knowledge of photography and thus, led up to this picture.
This is biography about his life as a photographer:
"Tommy leaves the interpretation of his work up to the viewer but says, 'For me, surrealism is about trying to explain something abstract like a feeling or a thought, expressing the subconscious with a picture. For my work I use my own inner life, thoughts and feelings as seeds to my pictures. In that sense the work is very personal, almost like a visual diary. Despite this subjectiveness in the process I hope that the work can engage the viewer in her or his own terms. I want the viewers to produce their own questions and answers when looking at the pictures, my own interpretations are really irrelevant in this context.'
His work is represented in collections all over the world from the National Museum of Photography in Colombia to the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. During the last eight years his work has won over 30 international awards.
In 2012 Tommy won the Lumen Prize with his picture 'Torn' and in 2014 he was named 'One to Watch' by Saatchi Art."

In this photo you can see a man with an anchor coming out at the top in what to seems to be in a middle on nowhere, all you can see in the background are mountains with no sign of nature in sight showing us that this is in a desolated world and he might feel anger or stuck shown by the anchor itself as its digging against the ground and you can also see cracks in the ground. He has used Photoshop to create this image as this would not be a real event, the theme is very dull since there's only two colours black and white with tones of grey.
The depth of field he has used is medium-large as you can see the background clearly, the mountains are straight while his body is slightly tilted. There's nothing else going on in the picture as it's just a barren wasteland filled with nothing but cracks on the floor.

Composition
The middle of this image is the main focus point, what we see is a man with an anchor coming out from his head, the left and right are empty only showing the background to us, this photo is half ground half sky as people can see clouds at the top, in the background are mountains like I mentioned in content. The exposure in this image is very high since we can see light coming from the cloud-filled sky, covering most of the sunlight trying to keep the place from being lit up.
Connection
This connects with my work because of how this image is presented, this is an abstract picture since it presents the theme of isolation in a land where we can't recognise as the ideas behind it seem clouded away from us like how the clouds are masking away the sun. The anchor in the man's head represents how we can feel stuck and how ideas can make us feel we can't move or do anything but with enough effort, most things that seem possible are infact possible. The ideas will fit into my work not because of the message, but because of the execution Tommy has done to present what I think his ideas are.
Comment
I really like this image due to the concepts behind it, the theme of isolation ad how they perform it brilliantly in execution and

Wanda Wulz - 5Cs
Context
This photo was taken by Wanda Wulz, a surrealist Italian photographer who experimented with different shoots on her photos. She was born in Trieste Italy, 25 July 1903 and has died on the 16th April 1984 at the age of 81. The photo above is her most successful image, in English it is called 'Cat and I' while in Italian, it's called 'Io + gatto' and is very famous within the photography community since its a futurist image.
Content
This photo has two images merged together with a top layer and a bottom layer to make a merge with a feline and a human, you can see feline ears very faintly on her head, the feline could be used in a way as a mask. This photo was taken around the 1930s the colour is black and white with tones of grey. The image is in focus as you can see everything in it, the black background can act as a frame while the lighting of the white is the main focus point since it stands out. In my opinion the positions are thought out carefully since all the facial expressions are all in line. The medium was Gelatin silver print, this is something new that I have learnt, I had to research what it meant and this is what the process is "A suspension of silver salts in gelatin is coated onto a support such as glass, flexible plastic or film, baryta paper, or resin-coated paper. These light-sensitive materials are stable under normal keeping conditions and are able to be exposed and processed even many years after their manufacture." I think this image was in a studio environment as it looks as though there was lighting used to highlight the face.
Composition
The main central point is in the middle and it's the faces of the cat and the woman, the strong leading line is specifically the eyes which to me are the main focus as they are looking straight at you, the foreground are the paws and the whiskers make up the width of the photograph however I feel it was taken from a birds eye view as you can see the top of the person's head. The lighting is a big contrast of black and white, Wanda Wulz must have played around with scale as I know that a cat's head isn't as big as a typical human head but she has somehow manipulated a method to line up the features of both the cat and woman. It looks as though a small depth of field has been used as the background and body is not in focus. I think she has used a tripod to take this picture and the background is pure black possibly filled with darkness to create a creepy effect.
Connection
Her style of her work links to my theme because she is a surrealist photographer and my theme is weird and wonderful. This photo in particular has inspired me, to take a picture of my pet dog and me and merge it together further in this project and create a weird and unrealistic portrait of me and my dog however the tools I'll be using will be Photoshop and I'll have to consider lighting, position and background to create a high quality surrealistic photo.
Comment
To me, this is one of her greatest portraits of her work. She has experimented with different tools at her disposal to create unique images never to be seen in the past. I think her strengths are that she has used lighting correctly and the scale is used perfectly to frame the image. Another strength is the main focus point is on the image that she has captured personally to me I like to look at the image without any distractions because it makes her point more clear this was her photography style following her response to surrealism using photography as surrealism was the art movement in the 1930s.

- Levitation, I will use a stool which I will then Photoshop out to make it seem they are floating this will communicate a magical theme. My focus point will be in the middle for composition the white balance will be different depending on weather conditions, everything has to be focused because of this i'll use a large depth of field. ISO will be auto since it's recommended to do so and shutter speed is not necessarily important on this shoot. Time of the day is important too, it will be taken in the day. The shot will be a mid shot to get everything in the shoot.
Location notes-permission, studio, transport and weather:
- My location will be set at the sports field at school.

I have manipulated my photographs using Photoshop, the tools I've used are:
- Rectangular Marquee Tool to crop out anything unnecessary.
- The smudge tool to make the images smooth.
- The eraser tool to make it look like its in the mirror.
- Lighting effects to make the image in the mirror stand out more.
Linking paragraph
I have done two shoots the first one where I use levitation the second one where I manipulated images using a mirror, both of my shoots were inspired by Tommy Inberg since he has created images using mirrors and levitation, my next shoot however will be inspired by Wanda Wulz as her work intrigued me and made me want to experiment with something different, this also makes me wonder how I can finalise my outcomes with this type of subject. What I need to do is go home and take a picture of one my two dogs, take a picture of a model in my school and layer both of these pictures together which will give me the final outcomes I desire. The tools I'll be using is Photoshop will be filters to enhance the quality and using layering tools to merge both of these photos however what I may find challenging is when to find the balance when my image is finished.

WorstThis is the worst because..
I don't like the pink tint that it has as I like the colours plain, simple and just its original colour to make it look realistic. |
BestThis is the best because..
You can see that the human does look like its a breed of a half human and a half dog, making it even more weird since you won't see this in real life, maybe only in a dream. |
The processes I have used for Photoshop are:
- Eraser tool to rub out half of the dog's face.
- I have used different settings for layers i.e Linear light, blending change, etc.
- Smudge tool to blend both faces with each other.
- Quick select to make erasing more manageable.

My final Evaluation for Weird and Wonderful
The project theme, during March to mid July, I did is 'weird and wonderful', when I was given the theme I didn't take it as seriously as a theme like conflict which I took seriously, as I was more interested in that subject. Because of this I was allowed to take a more creative approach. When I thought of weird and wonderful the two themes I immediately thought of were surrealism and levitation as both of these themes were weird but also wonderful and achievable to recreate. The reason why I picked levitation and surrealism is because those two subjects were the most interesting to me and I wanted to capture photographs that I could manipulate on Photoshop to create different outcomes. This was the part that I enjoy the most as I learned new skills on Photoshop. However I did not enjoy this theme as much as conflict since this topic wasn't enjoyable in my opinion and thus, felt like I was doing a job I didn't enjoy.
In my opinion the part I enjoyed most in the project was using Photoshop to manipulating the images using the tools to produce bizarre outcomes while still making them have a realistic look. I feel this project has helped me to develop my ability to use Photoshop and be more creative since I had to think about my locations more and how I capture an image that can be manipulated. Another part I enjoyed was taking photographs at different locations like the park as the background were more suitable for the themes surrealism and levitation.
In this project I learned how to use Photoshop and use a wide variety of tools available to me on Photoshop I needed to use the patch tool, this was a tool I have not used before and at first I found it challenging but in the end I used the tool to my advantage allowing me to produce the outcome I wanted. Another technique I have used is the clone tool, this allowed me to clone the background when I was creating my levitation image.
Techniques I would like to improve is ways to use different props to help the themes that I am photographing and to keep it realistic.
